Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease is a form of arthritis whereby crystals of calcium pyrophosphate build up in the joints, causing pain and inflammation. Because the symptoms of the disease resemble those from other forms of arthritis, it can be difficult to diagnose. The paper that inspired this cover used ultrasound to visualise the deposits of crystal and aimed on creating a standardised scoring system that could be used to diagnose CCPD.
