‘And Their Children After Them’ both starts and ends with motorbikes. Set in the fictional town of Heillange in the valley of Lorraine, with its decommissioned steel mill brooding over the town, the novel begins when Hacine steals a motorbike belonging to Anthony’s dad. This sets off a chain of events ending six years later when Anthony returns the favour and steals a motorbike from Hacine.
